When the opportunity to move to Buenos Aires came up we decided to just go for it… It’s proven to be the adventure we thought it would be…
Here are some of our early posts upon just arriving in the city:
The Paris of South America Really?
Enjoy!

It is been really nice to come across your website..The things you wrote were so personal and accurate…Usually a foreigner can have a better, more rational view on a country’s reality.
Well, congratulations, good luck and welcome to the southern tip of the world…If there is still a real New World this is it…Just wait 15 to 20 years and Argentina will be one of the best places of the world to live in.I am sure of that. This time they have finally found the way to reconcile economic growth and social protection.
Now, I would like to ask you something.
I am paraguayan and currently live in Asuncion but I want to move to B.A.
I’ve been an english teacher here for about 6 years now and recently came back to the country from Britain where I worked for a year.
I believe I have a native command of english as well as portuguese and spanish of course.
I believe I have all the skills of someone interested in working in Real Estate.
The fact that I am a citizen of MERCOSUR makes it easy for me to start working there.
I do believe I could do a great job with you or any other agents you might know about..
I would really appreciate it if you could give an answer on this matter.
Yours sincerely
Juan

Dear Juan,
Thank you for your comments.
I’ve thought about how to respond to your inquiry, but, I don’t really have a good answer… I’m not a real estate agent, just a property ’scout’ for some investors…
Generally I’d recommend moving from Asuncion to BA because there seem to be more opportunities here…
If I were you I’d move to BA and live as cheaply as I could at first. Then, setup a blog like this one (it’s very easy to do and it’s free), write about real estate in Palermo Soho in english (or all 3 languages if you can) everyday and take pictures. The real estate market is hot there for English speaking foreigners… You could offer a service where if they pay you $100-$500 (get the money with paypal.com, make it easy as possible for them) you could scout properties for them, take pictures and send them the details. Make contacts with the local real estate agents, so, that they tell you about the latest properties coming on the market.
If you work hard at this, keep at it, and are really honest with people, they will refer you to their friends. Before you know it you will have a successful business.
That’s my idea. I don’t know for sure if it will work… but it’s a good chance that it will.
All the best,
Will

Hi Will,
I love your stories on BA. A friend & I hope to make a visit there in the fall, 2007. One thing about the emails you send: the photos aren’t completely coming through. If I go to the Feed Burner site, then I can see all the entries, photos, etc., but not if it’s just sent to my inbox.
Thanks for all the info. I have a fascination with BA, even had a dream about it the other night, a Hotel Eire run by 2 middle-aged women. Anything like that there?

interesting site. not sure how exactly I got here, but I’ll be back, I’m sure. I am also an American living in Argentina. I’d be interested in learning more about what you all are up to down here and if you are in need of writers/editors. While my spanish isn’t at a native level, I can hold my own.

I live on the caribbean island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. I love the look and feel of your blog and have been wanting to create one myself. Could you give me some directions of how I can get a site to look and feel like yours? I’d greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance

Aloha Will,
I thought you might like to know your profile is not showing up at BlogTopSites, consequently, you’re not getting your ranking number in the badge.

Hey Jerry,
You can have a blog exactly like mine in seconds…
Go to wordpress.com and sign-up.
Go to ‘Presentation’ and change it to ‘Tarski Theme’, presto!
Then start playing around with it, and change it to your liking…
Enjoy!

che will,
note to let you know your blog is one of the most articulate around. I especially appreciate snd agree with your slant on most things you have written about. your piece on 4th of july was most appropriate. I didnt go for the same reason. Not sure how our politics mesh, I view myself as a marxist capitalist, but you clearly seem in touch with realities of our screwed up world. Even share the same frustrations with the language, something I would give anything to solve if it were possible by osmosis. And we obvously love our new homeland.
so I am an antique ex conservation biology teacher (UCLA) just finishing my initial booklet here on garden butterflies - the bottom line of which is “if the butterflies are dying, how about your kids”. Then too I trade interest rate derivatives, which provides a grandstand view and feel of the stochastically deteriorating economies of the northern hemisphere. Pentultimately I am sort of an amateur architect and hard ass who renovated my apt here in 7 weeks, going from five to one room with not a sq mm untouched. Everybody said this was impossible, but with the right people….
In conclusion, would look forward to meeting you at some point.
saludos

I’m 26 yo and I’ve been living in Chicago with my girlfriend for a little more than a year now. I was interested on buying a condo in the Downtown area of Chicago (it is considered a “buyer’s market” right now) but then thought looking for properties in my home city, Buenos Aires. That is how I came across you guys, and I just love when foreign people show that love for BA.
My mom kind of envisioned the 2001 Crisis, that is why we moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1999, right after I finished High School. In 2003, I was still longing for going back to BA, and decided to go back there in order to study and pay for school on my own, because education is more affordable over there. I lived with my dad in Palermo, and in 2005 moved to San Telmo on my own, I was renting a tiny house on the rooftop of a parking lot! It is the best spot in the world, it a small studio with the biggest rooftop ever, which you should check out. The address of the parking lot is Defensa 929 and the owner is my friend, but his English sucks, so I will probably send you some pics in the future.
Moving to BA, allowed me to graduated from Universidad del Museo Social Argentino (UMSA) with a degree in “Artworks Estimation and Appreciation Expert”. Nonetheless, after working some time at CDW as a Business Account Manager, another company hired me as an International Business Coordinator because they want to increase sales in Latin America and Spain.
We plan to go back to BA in 3 years, and wanted to ask you some questions… which I will do anytime soon.
I won’t bore you anymore. Good luck with your Spanish!
Ivan.

Dear Will:
Very impressed with your blog, really first class. I just subscribed, and look forward to getting your updates.
I noted in your article about the July 4th celebration — I fully agree with your take — that you grew up near Monticello. I live in Charlottesville, but I did grow up in BA. Small world, isn’t it?
I haven’t lived in BA for the last 44 years, but visit frequently. Have been toying with buying a pied a terre there for a long time. But, I’m just scared about dealing with the locals, I just know them too well! Laying, cheating, posturing and general unreliability… How do you manage with all that?
Look forward to your insights,
Henry

Hola Will,
I think your blog on Buenos Aires is excellent. Very nice stories and descriptions! Anyway, I wanted to let you know of a website I’ve made about what if the British had succeeded in their invasions of the Rio de la Plata 200 years ago. In summary, the area that’s now Argentina and Uruguay gets colonized by the British and develops in much the same matter as Canada or Australia/NZ. Nothing of the vast economic and political chaos since the 1940s in that world’s version of the Southern Cone. (As a bonus, no Falklands War either.) Come check it out - http://www.britishargentina.com. I am constantly revising it nowadays, as I’m putting a Spanish translation of it relatively soon.

“But, I’m just scared about dealing with the locals, I just know them too well! Laying, cheating, posturing and general unreliability… ”
Ha! Loved this last post. The locals mostly stink. I should know, I’m one of them.
I’ve been reading Bill Bonner for a year now and tha’ts how I learnt about Will’s site. And I learnt about Bill Bonner by reading mises.org. Before reading mises.org I read a good deal of libertarian classics. So, in case it’s not kind of obvious, I’m a loony libertarian born, and living, in Argentina.
So, Will, if you want to visit Rosario, I would be happy to show you around.
Let me know if you’re interested.
Best,
Juan.

Thanks for all your insighs on Argentina. We have been considering moving there after 3 trips to various parts of Argentina in the past 3 years. We completely agree with you about the illegal and criminal American Bush junta that currently controls the United States. Free elections! HA! We all know that Diebold gave Bush the Presidency. We long for the freedom under good government, such as Kirchner, in Argentina that you enjoy. Please keep up your good work.

Hi Guys! So glad to have found your blog! I’ve been hearing reports that you’re doing well…but it will be fun to go through and get the scoop in your own words.
Listen — for some reason — I’ve got the bug to come down there. I figure I’ll know why when I get there
so I’m heading down a few days after Christmas and staying for two weeks or so. With my luck, you’ll be somewhere else
but if you’re around…let’s get together! Drop me a line and let’s connect between now and then.
In the meantime — take care!
Monica

Hi Will,
I loved reading your blog! Thank you so much for writing about your experiences!
My boyfriend and I are both in real estate and find BA to have many opportunities.
We will be making out way to BA Dec 29-Jan 6, staying in Palmero. Would you happen to have any suggestions for NYE? We rented an apartment for a week during our stay to really experience BA life.
Ciao,

I randomly stumbled upon your blog and wanted to ask for some advice about Buenos Aires.
My parents will be going there in early January and for Christmas, I have decided to buy them dinner. I was thinking I would like to make reservations, print out a menu, and then give them X amount of pesos (Im looking to spend USD$75ish).
What restaurant do you recommend for something nice, genuinely Argentinian, helpful service (a little English would be nice), great atmosphere, and delicious food?
Thanks!!

Hi!, I’m producer from Buenos Aires and we’re looking for US & Canadians for a Documentary about “Water as unique resource” to be showed at an International Fair in Spain later this year.
We’re looking for Males and Women aged 18-65 years old, from USA/Canada living in Buenos Aires area. Don’t need to be an actor, since we’re looking for “real” people (its just sit front of the camera and give thoughts about the Water and its future as a natural resouce based on a brief script and your opinions).
If you are interested, or known any who might be, please contact me at: luis.reggiardo@gmail.com
Thx!
